Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi (1852 – 1926) designed some of the world’s most astonishing buildings, interiors and parks; Japanese director Hiroshi Teshigahara constructed some of the most aesthetically audacious films ever made. Here their artistry melds in a unique, enthralling cinematic experience. Less a documentary than a visual poem, Teshigahara’s ANTONIO GAUDI takes viewers on a tour of Gaudi’s truly spectacular architecture, including his massive, still-unfinished masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona. With camera work as bold and sensual as the curves of his subject’s organic structures, Teshigahara immortalizes Gaudi on film.

In my large-scale installations I am concerned with symbolic imagery relating to the feelings of apathetic comfort, the marginalized idea of rebellion, and recently, the allegorical relationship between alchemy and the American dream. Using architectural elements, figures, and furniture as symbolic imagery, I create sculptures and installations that function as cumulative narratives, building as the viewer experiences them. Through the combination of hyper realistic figures and noticeably fake objects I attempt to strengthen the narrative by questioning our point of view and blurring the line between reality and fiction. Often these environments appear absurd, yet these humorous facades only function to mask true meaning, ultimately serve to intensify the tragedy and sociopolitical realities within the narrative.
